With strung wires, transformers hanging at meters and overbuilt infrastructure designed to accommodate peak usages, electricity is - as activists have long pointed out - the last industry to digitize.
Lisa Friedman of the LA Daily News points out that the electric grid is antiquated and fragile. A “smart grid,” full of digital intelligence is on the horizon. This grid would take advantage of locally generated power from homeowners with solar- and wind-powered generators.
This new power grid be more robust, immune from brownouts that plague the system in the hot summer months of peak usage.
A company called Citizenre is looking to make this a reality by renting solar panels to homeowners and charging them for the power produced. As an independent ecopreneur with Citizenre I’m finding that people are very interested in having their own solar power plant on their roof. More information at SolarForYourHome.com.
